Kenneth W. Behrend (1924-2009)

Michael is a graduate of Mercyhurst College, magna cum laude, having received a Bachelor of Arts Degree with dual concentrations in Finance and Business Management, with a minor in Philosophy. Michael went on to earn his Juris Doctor degree at Duquesne University School of Law.
Setting Michael apart in the field of securities law is the fact that, prior to attending law school, he gained extensive experience in the financial services industry by working as an advisor and planner for a top-ranking independent wealth management and financial planning firm. He obtained his Series 7, Series 66, and Life, Accident and Health Insurance licenses, and managed his own financial advisory practice. This background has provided Michael with valuable exposure and practical insight into several facets of the global financial services industry.
While earning his Juris Doctor Degree at Duquesne University, Michael continued to sharpen his understanding of business and finance by studying the law of corporations, partnerships, LLC's, LP's and sole proprietorships, tax law, bankruptcy law, securities law and regulation, insurance law, the law of patents and trade secrets, contract law, the law of sales and leases, and the law of wills, trusts and estates. Michael also completed a comprehensive research project and authored a 59-page analysis concerning the legal duties of broker-dealers after the decision by the D.C. Federal Court of Appeals in Financial Planning Association v. Securities & Exchange Commission, which struck down the SEC's now-infamous "Merrill Lynch" Rule. Further, Michael worked as a Student Attorney in the Securities Arbitration Practicum at Duquesne University, where he acquired experience representing investors in the securities arbitration process and procured additional training in investment fraud and securities law. Finally, Michael gained extensive experience in bankruptcy law by serving as a Law Clerk for the Chapter 13 Trustee for the Western District of Pennsylvania.
During law school, Michael was the recipient of various awards and honors, including the CALI Excellence for the Future Award in Securities Regulation, the CALI Excellence for the Future Award in Family Law, and the highly esteemed Gerald K. Gibson Award for Excellence in Bankruptcy. Michael served for two years on Duquesne University's Business Law Journal, first as Associate Editor, then as Executive Editor.
Michael is admitted to the bar of the courts of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the bar of the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania. Michael is also a member of the Allegheny County Bar Association, Pennsylvania Bar Association, American Bar Association, and Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity.
